Ever since the promotional campaign began for the Merc’s first solo outing, the films have jokingly subverted blockbuster cliche and done the unexpected. Now, in an interview with THR, Deadpool 2 screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have revealed that they might just skip a third movie entirely and go right to Deadpool 4.

This is both funny and kind of appropriate. After all, Wade Wilson’s next cinematic appearance is going to be in X-Force, as they explain, so he is kind of getting a third film, anyways.

“Calendar-wise, X-Force is next up in line. … Come the fall, I think [Drew Goddard] will turn his attention fulltime to X-Force and so that’s next up in the series. I do think we are always thinking about Deadpool. It will be nice to take a little bit of a break.

We’ve been writing consecutive Deadpool drafts for the last nine years. And we’ve got drafts since 2009 in our computer all the way through to 2018. So, it will be nice to kind of catch our breath. My guess is you will see Deadpool again in his own movie. Whether we skip Deadpool 3 and just go to Deadpool 4, I’m not sure. But my guess is you will be seeing much more of Deadpool in the future in various forms and fashions.”

It sounds like X-Force will be the true next installment in the Deadpool strand of the X-Universe, and I’ve no doubt that studio execs will be paying close attention to which characters from the sequel are best received so as to shape the team accordingly.

With Drew Goddard on script duties, it’ll be interesting to see whether he can capture the same irreverent attitude that made Deadpool and, by the looks of things, its sequel such hits. Similarly, will DP be able to take more of an ensemble role in the movie, or will he just naturally dominate proceedings? So many questions, so few answers.

I suspect we’ll find out sooner rather than later, though. If Deadpool 2 cleans up at the box office – which it looks like it will – Fox will be eager to get X-Force into production as soon as possible. And if that’s the case, then you can expect to hear a lot more about it in the not too distant future.
