Having confirmed that the NetherRealm Studios video game, Injustice, did indeed influence the Knightmare sequence in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder hosted an online discussion with fans earlier today to clear up any confusion regarding the discarded narrative.
For those in need of a refresher, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) witnesses an apocalyptic future where the planet is under the control of Darkseid and his Parademons, due to an apparent partnership with Superman (Henry Cavill). Just as the Man of Steel’s about to kill Batman, Bruce wakes up in the Batcave. Then, through a break in the space-time continuum, The Flash (Ezra Miller) communicates with Bruce from the future, saying the following:
“Bruce! Listen to me right now! It’s Lois! Lois Lane! She’s the key! Am I too soon!? I’m too soon! You were right about him! You were always right about him! Fear him! Fear him and find us. You have to come find us, Bruce!”
The ominous warning is Barry Allen pleading with Batman to find Lois Lane, unite the Justice League and be wary of some tragedy that will befall Superman at some point in the future. It’s all a bit confusing, but now, the director’s hopped on Vero to explain things a little bit more, and you can check out a few of his conversations in the gallery below.
According to Snyder, in the future, The Flash is running on his cosmic treadmill to relay the aforementioned warning to a past version of Bruce, but is “too soon.” Thereby indicating that he “went too far back” and “will have to step off the cosmic treadmill one more time.”
The vision then leads Bruce to abandon the Batcave, believing it’s been compromised, and move operations to Wayne Manor for his war against Darkseid. Snyder also confirmed that the dialogue, “you were always right about him! Fear him!” is referencing both Superman and “something darker.”
Unfortunately, the director never got the chance to explore this disastrous future in Justice League or any other future installments, but his commitment to DC minutia is still admirable. That being said, although his blueprint is detailed and something the DCEU sorely needs at the moment, it’s simply becoming too painful to bear off screen, especially given the current direction of the shared universe.
Even so, we always appreciate it whenever Zack opens up about his films – including Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice – and we’re curious to see what he decides to share next.
