Jake Gyllenhaal Reportedly In Contention To Play Mysterio For Spider-Man: Homecoming 2

Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel will supposedly place Peter Parker on a collision course with Mysterio, and he'll be played by none other than Jake Gyllenhaal.

He’s battled the Vulture and been caught up amongst the superhero smackdown that is Avengers: Infinity War, but for his next gig, Tom Holland’s Wall-Crawler may be going up against Mysterio.

As casting on Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 begins to heat, British tabloid The Sun (h/t The Express; MCU Exchange) has uncovered new intel which suggests Marvel Studios has its crosshairs placed on Jake Gyllenhaal for the plum, villainous role – presumably at the expense of Ryan Gosling (First Man), who has since pulled out of negotiations.

If true, it’ll mark the moment when Gyllenhall goes full circle, given he was previously up for the role of Spider-Man all those years ago before it ultimately fell into the hands of Tobey Macguire. The Division star was also among those linked with The Batman, though it appears Matt Reeves’ standalone pic may well herald the return of Batfleck, after all.

Circling back to Marvel’s Homecoming sequel, and sources close to The Sun now claim that Jake Gyllenhaal is finally ready to break his superhero duck – unless you’re counting his tour-de-force performance as Boston Marathon survivor, Jeff Bauman.

“Producers were keen to sign Ryan but he was busy filming another project. Jake is a suitable alternative with experience of playing villainous characters,” reads the report.

An actor of Gyllenhaal’s caliber would also be an incredible addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we’ve already seen him indulge in darker material thanks to the likes of Donnie Darko, Prisoners and Nightcrawler. So perhaps his latest gig will involve wrangling his own rendition of Quentin Beck? Time will tell.

All we know for sure is that Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 has been earmarked for release on July 5th, 2019, and it’ll signal the true beginning of Marvel’s Phase 4.
