Although Oliver Queen made some minor alterations to his look throughout the first three seasons of Arrow, it wasn’t until the fourth year that he received a massive upgrade when it came to what he wore out in the field. Similarly, the Flash was rewarded with a shiny new costume once season 4 of his own show rolled around.
Now, with Supergirl confirmed to be returning for the 2018-19 broadcast year along with its other DC TV brethren, we can’t help but shake the feeling that the Girl of Steel will soon undergo a visual overhaul. After all, not only would this be in keeping with the aforementioned timeline established, but our heroine could very well have her world shaken up before long if this situation with Reign ends as brutally as we assume.
In other words, it’s time for a makeover!
Perhaps it’s purely coincidental, but Kara Danvers’ comic book counterpart will be sporting a new costume as of August’s Supergirl #21, which also welcomes the new creative team of writer Marc Andreyko and artist Kevin Maguire. In fact, you can check out some conceptuals by way of Jorge Jimenez, as well as Terry Dodson’s cover to issue #21, in the gallery below.
To be honest, I can see the more classic-looking example offered at the end of the slideshow having the most influence on where the TV series could go next because it’s very much in keeping with the Maiden of Might’s threads throughout the ages. But, if the costuming department wants to take a sharp left turn, they could draw inspiration from the hooded attire made for space travel. It’s drastically different from the norm, yes, but I think it looks pretty damn cool.
And if you think we’re reaching with this one, let it not be forgotten how the Scarlet Speedster was redesigned to favor what was seen on TV during the short-lived DC You era, not to mention how the current take on the Green Arrow that’s been running around in the comics since Rebirth launched bears more than a passing resemblance to what Stephen Amell wore during Arrow season 4. It may sound silly, but synergy helps sell books.
