Black Widow in the MCU

Avengers: Infinity War Almost Saw Spider-Man And Black Widow Meet

Avengers: Infinity War featured many heroes meeting for the first time. From Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy, to Doctor Strange meeting Iron Man, to Bruce Banner bowing before Black Panther. Still, there wasn't enough time or room in the story for all of our dream crossovers to come true. But which team-ups were originally planned that didn't end up making it into the final draft of the script?

But which team-ups were originally planned that didn’t end up making it into the final draft of the script?

That was the question posed to Infinity War screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus during an in-depth chat with Collider. The first one that sprung to mind was a fun meeting between the two spider-themed Avengers: Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson). McFeely revealed that the pair had a “really good conversation” in an early draft before changes to the plot necessitated its removal.

“I liked a draft we had where Peter Parker met Natasha. This sort of world-weary woman who has all this red in her ledger and this fresh-faced kid. There was at least one really good conversation that, because we restructured things, couldn’t work.”

In the final version of the film, Peter and Natasha never even came close to meeting, as Team Cap and Team Iron Man didn’t cross paths. Spider-Man went off-world with Tony Stark, Strange and the Guardians to face Thanos on Titan, while Steve Rogers’ Secret Avengers set up shop in Wakanda and took on a horde of the villain’s henchmen, the Outriders.

Of course, Black Widow and Spidey have been in the same movie before, and even briefly fought on the same side, back in Captain America: Civil War. However, Holland and Johansson never shared any one-on-one time in the team-up film – we’re not even sure if the duo have properly met by the time of Avengers: Infinity War. Maybe they’ll get to have that conversation the writers speak of in Avengers 4? Er, that is, if Peter’s resurrected…
