How Will Marvel Promote Homecoming 2 Without Spoiling Avengers 4?

Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have addressed the somewhat tricky problem of promoting Homecoming 2 without spoiling the events of Avengers 4.

One glance at the Marvel calendar will tell you that Avengers 4 and Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, arguably two of the biggest movies the MCU has yet produced, are scheduled to arrive within nine weeks of one another which, in the grand scheme of things, isn’t much of a respite.

Not unlike the brief interlude between Infinity War and this summer’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, Marvel Studios will face a tricky situation if they’re to promote Homecoming 2 without ruining the plot of Avengers 4. It’s a conundrum, and one that Collider (h/t Screen Rant) presented to screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, to which they replied:

Markus: Look, two hours of Aunt May crying, it could be great

McFeely: It’s a good question and it certainly is the bigger question about audience expectation and you know too much about how Hollywood works or release schedules things like that, does it hurt your enjoyment of the movie?

Markus: Clearly, if there are people crying and there are articles about how to console your children at the end of it, it doesn’t matter what you know

McFeely: We can’t make movies for people who read Variety, you know what I mean?

From the outside looking in, it seems as though Marvel will face a tricky few months in the build-up to Avengers 4, but after 19 movies and countless accolades, we’d be foolish to think that Kevin Feige and Co. haven’t got something special planned for the marketing campaign of Homecoming 2 which, if the hot new rumor is to be believed, may release as Spectacular Spider-Man.

As things stand, Avengers 4 has been penciled in for May 3rd, 2019 – you know, providing Marvel doesn’t bring it forward into April in the same manner of Infinity War – with Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 expected to launch Phase 4 (and a possible Sinister Six story arc?) in July of next year.
