Marvel Scribe Stephen McFeely Has One Regret About Avengers: Infinity War

The New York Times caught up with the writers behind Avengers: Infinity War to discuss Thanos, Earth's Mightiest Heroes and their one regret.

Coming off The Winter Soldier and Marvel’s Civil War, co-writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were tasked with penning two of the biggest movies in superhero history.

We are, of course, referring to Infinity War and the so-far untitled Avengers 4, which has become something of a hot-button topic ever since Marvel unleashed the Thanopocalypse (trademark pending) and brought a swift end to half of all life in the frickin’ universe.

Doing so wasn’t easy, of course, as Markus and McFeely were forced to build Infinity War in such a way that the film revolved around Thanos, not Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, as he sought to acquire all six Infinity Stones and enforce the bleakest kind of population control imaginable.

As a matter of fact, while reflecting on the film’s runaway success ($1.9 billion and counting), both McFeely and Markus spoke to the New York Times about Infinity War, and it wasn’t long before the former scribe listed his one regret about the whole process.

Had we started from scratch, we would not have chosen six damn MacGuffins. That’s not that helpful. It was difficult to get that all in.

It’s not exactly feasible given Avengers: Infinity War is the culmination of an 18-movie arc, but it’s interesting to hear McFeely’s perspective nonetheless.

Markus, on the other hand, is adamant that Marvel’s third Avengers movie can stand on its own two feet – the only difference here is that the bad guy actually wins.

We still argue that Infinity War is its own, complete film. It’s just the one where the bad guy wins.

Avengers: Infinity War is playing all across the globe. Its sequel, tentatively titled Avengers 4, will tend to unfinished business on May 3rd, 2019.
