How Deadpool 2’s Most Gruesome Scene Affects The Future Of X-Force

Drew Goddard, writer and director on Fox's X-Force, has outlined the ways in which Deadpool 2's bloodbath scene affects his team-up movie.

You know the scene, right? The moment when Deadpool 2 descends into a full-blown bloodbath?

Without straying too far into spoiler territory, let’s just say that there’s a moment in the David Leitch-directed sequel where the Merc With a Mouth breaks the fourth wall quite spectacularly, all the while flipping the bird at comic book movies and their hackneyed tropes. So, business as usual, then…

Indeed, during a recent, spoiler-filled chat with Entertainment Weekly, writer-director Drew Goddard explained how that scene will cause a ripple effect, one which spans all the way to Fox’s planned X-Force crossover.

To be honest, I think that’s why it excited me so much. I remember reading that scene and just cackling with delight, specifically because it was the very last thing you’d expect to happen in one of these movies. These movies are so careful to set up the next thing and the next thing, and it made me so happy.

Having helped pen the frankly hilarious script for Deadpool 2, Ryan Reynolds will go on to serve as producer on the X-Force ensemble movie, and it seems both Reynolds and Goddard have already held talks about the Merc’s next steps – not to mention the lack of story restrictions placed upon Deadpool 2.

One thing I said to Ryan was, ‘Don’t worry about it, we’ll come up with new ideas; you guys go make your movie, and do your thing. We’ll figure it out.’ That tends to be the way I like to work. It’s much more important to focus on making the movie that you’re making than focusing on the next thing. It’s much more important to just make one good movie and take your time, then let that dictate what the movies are after.

Getting Deadpool, Cable, and Domino back together is a dream come true for Goddard, who went on to explain how his upcoming team-up movie will bring out the very best (and the very worst) from each superpowered character.

It really all stems from a place of love; I love those comics, I love Ryan, I love Josh, and I love Zazie Beetz. When I think of the comics, I think of Cable and Domino and Deadpool, and it’s really just knowing, ‘Oh, right, there’s a world in the X-Universe for the blunt instruments of mutantdom.’ It’s much more about the characters and my love for them than it is about any plot or storyline. It’s more about loving them and wanting to see them bounce off each other.

At $500 million and counting, Deadpool 2 has already cemented its status as a bona fide hit. Exactly how high the Merc’s second adventure can climb, however, is another question entirely. Further afield, look for X-Force to enter production before the year’s end.
