Though Geoff Johns has done a fine job in his role as DC Entertainment’s President and Chief Creative Officer over the course of the past few years, it appears he’s ready to reposition himself within the company.
As it turns out, he’s vacating his title in order to establish Mad Ghost Productions, where he’ll serve as a writer and producer for film, comic book and television projects. Set to be exclusive to Warner Bros., it’ll focus on DC properties and other IPs.
When it comes to who’ll be taking over as CCO at DC, that responsibility will now fall upon the shoulders of the one and only Jim Lee, who’ll be expanding his role beyond publisher. And much like Johns, he remains an active fixture in the comic book industry, only he he lays claim to being one of the finest illustrators alive, as opposed to how his colleague has a gift for scripting.
Here’s what Johns himself had to say about the road that lies ahead:
“I took on a role at DCE because I love the characters and this universe more than anything. But, I want to spend my days writing and on set. I’m thrilled to get back to a more hands-on creative role. It’s a dream job on dream projects, reaching even deeper into DC’s vast pantheon of characters. I’m also excited to continue to work with the amazing team at DCE and my colleagues at Warner Bros.”
So, while it’s comforting to know that someone with Johns’ ability will be taking on a greater role when it comes to the live action side of DC, comic book readers may be concerned what all this means regarding his future in that particular medium.
As it turns out, Geoff will oversee “a new pop-up slate of comic books under the banner of ‘The Killing Zone’ focusing on new and lesser known DC characters and titles.” Additionally, he’s slated to continue his work on Doomsday Clock, as well as penning a new Shazam series shipping in the fall. And if that weren’t enough, he’s finally cooking up the highly anticipated “Three Jokers,” with none other than Jason Fabok on pencils!
Suffice it to say, the future is looking pretty darn good from where I’m sitting.
