After months and months of teases and false promises, our first official look at Larson’s heroine has finally arrived and it’s safe to say that this is the retro-inspired cover we’ve been waiting for (“the future is female!” declares EW), particularly after Joe and Anthony Russo teased the legendary heroine at the tail-end of Avengers: Infinity War.

Front and center for this one is Oscar-winner Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, an air force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an extra-terrestrial following a near-death experience. What follows is an origin story unlike any we’ve ever seen before, so it’s small wonder why Marvel boss Kevin Feige believes Carol is about to become the strongest member of the Avengers roster – presumably at the expense of Hulk and Thor.

And here’s how co-director Anna Boden views her cosmic hero:

This is not a superhero who’s perfect or otherworldly or has some godlike connection. But what makes her special is just how human she is. She’s funny, but doesn’t always tell good jokes. And she can be headstrong and reckless and doesn’t always make the perfect decisions for herself. But at her core, she has so much heart and so much humanity — and all of its messiness.

On the casting front, Marvel’s final roll call for the 2019 offshoot comprises Nick Fury himself, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Clark Gregg (!) and Jude Law as Doctor Walter Lawson (AKA Mar-Vell), a high-ranking Kree soldier who proves instrumental in Carol’s origin story.

Captain Marvel will finally – finally! – see a release on March 8th, 2019. And with the first official look at Larson now out in the wild, you can be sure that a trailer will be coming shortly.
