Up until now, we’ve laid eyes on not one, but two teaser trailers for Ruben Fleischer’s Venom movie, and there’s been nary a mention of Peter Parker.
Our friendly neighborhood Web-Head is inexplicably tied to the symbiote, given he’s one of Spider-Man’s greatest ever foes, but studio red tape has seemingly prevented Tom Holland (or another Spidey actor) from appearing in the October spinoff…or has it?
Ever since Holland joined the MCU as Peter Parker, and Venom flickered into life over at Sony Pictures, there have been rumblings that director Ruben Fleischer has indeed carved out room for a cameo, though it’s looking increasingly likely that that bit part has been earmarked for Peter Parker, not Spider-Man.
Granted, the latest update from Fleischer suggests otherwise, after the filmmaker told Empire (h/t CBM) that his Venom movie really belongs to Eddie Brock. And no one else.
This feels very much like Venom’s movie. It’s the introduction of the character. As to where it will go in future movies, and who he’ll run across, I can’t say.
On a more general note, the director went on to name-drop a series of film classics (An American Werewolf in London, for instance) that inspired him during the creation of Venom:
Venom is unique within the canon of Marvel. You can’t say there are a lot of other heroes like him. There’s something about the tone of Venom that’s darker and more menacing. He’s not a conventional superhero by any stretch.
Among my influences were John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, even An American Werewolf In London. Unlike most superheroes who get bitten by a spider or invent their own Batsuit, Venom is really the combination of two beings to create a third.” Apparently, that’s going to be reflected in Hardy’s performance, something the recently released trailer for the movie definitely promised would happen.
Venom scurries into theaters on October 5th – with or without Peter Parker. But will Ruben Fleischer’s Spidey spinoff have what it takes to launch Sony’s planned universe in strong, convincing fashion? Time will tell.
