Original Child’s Play Creators Commit To TV Series In Spite Of MGM Remake

MGM’s announcement of a Stranger Things-esque remake of Child’s Play has created an interesting fork in the road for everyone’s favorite Devil Doll.

Two weeks ago, for instance, we brought you the news that franchise creators Don Mancini and long-time producer David Kirschner had mapped out plans for a live-action TV show based on Chucky and his wicked ways. Seven-time Child’s Play veteran Brad Dourif had also signed on to voice the pint-sized serial killer, though it’s fair to say MGM’s shock announcement threw a spanner in the works.

Thankfully, Bloody Disgusting caught up with Mancini and Kirschner recently to get their thoughts about the proposed Child’s Play remake. And don’t fret; that TV series is very much still on track. Or so says Don Mancini:

We’re still working on the series and also plan to continue the film franchise with Universal. We intend to stay true to the universe we’ve created.

The creative duo went on to confirm that Universal is “fully committed” to honoring Chucky canon within the Child’s Play series, and that more movies are in the pipeline.

Alas, they’re not all that interested in MGM’s remake, and outright declined the opportunity to be listed as executive producers on the film. It currently has Polaroid director Lars Klevberg pulling the reins, with It producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith also on board. No release date has been set, but we understand the project has been placed on the fast-track over at MGM.

Ditto for Child’s Play: The TV Series, though we’ve since learned that Brad Dourif won’t be involved in the film remake, either, as he’s firmly committed to playing the Devil Doll for Mancini and Kirschner moving forward.
