Marvel Comics Announces Black Panther Vs. Deadpool For October

In recent times, the House of Ideas has treated True Believers to miniseries that pit some of their most popular characters against each other - and with coherent explanations. That said, we're sure at least some of you remember last year's Deadpool vs. The Punisher and the gallons of blood it left behind, and the topic of today's discussion should certainly keep your interest in crossovers going.

As it turns out, two of this year’s box office juggernauts are set to butt heads in the appropriately titled Black Panther vs. Deadpool, a five-issue miniseries penned by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert writer Daniel Kibblesmith (Lockjaw) and illustrated by Ricardo Lopez Ortiz (Hit-Girl, Civil War II: Kingpin). Cover art, meanwhile, will be provided by Ryan Benjamin (Batman).

Right now, not many details have been revealed, but Marvel’s willing to tell us that the conflict occurs due to “a reason the Merc would rather not disclose (because, well, it makes him look bad!). Deadpool needs a piece of Vibranium though…and the only way to get Vibranium is to go through the Black Panther himself! But Deadpool soon learns that his unconventional methods don’t exactly work against the king of the most technologically advanced country on the planet…”

Here’s what editor Will Moss had to offer:

“Featuring a brawl you can only get in comics (for now anyway), BLACK PANTHER VS. DEADPOOL is the best of both worlds, equal parts Black Panther/Wakanda and Deadpool/Crazytown. In bouncing these two characters off each other (and sometimes through each other), Daniel and Ricardo have found some really fascinating insights into what makes them tick as individuals.”

I couldn’t help noticing how he said this fight can take place only in comics “for now.” Who knows, maybe once that Disney-Fox merger goes through we’ll see Ryan Reynolds sharing the screen with Chadwick Boseman? One can only hope.

Black Panther vs. Deadpool #1 arrives in comic shops on October 3rd.
