The Avengers Unite On Set In New York

We all knew that The Avengers was coming sooner or later. The numerous little annoying cameos in the Marvel Studios outlet for the past couple of years told us that they were working towards one big, ambitious project combining together all the Marvel comic book heroes you can think of except Spider-Man. With work well underway on The Avengers, the cast has united in New York to continue shooting, and these new photos show all the actors in character and thoroughly enjoying themselves.

I must say that it is an amazing feat to get all those actors together on one schedule for a film. Some of the hottest Hollywood talent of the moment: Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston and others all together shooting on the same set. Without even seeing the film I can say that that is impressive.

In the pictures below, everyone appears to be in character and you just can’t help but snigger at the Thor costumes against the more modern costumes of Renner and Evans. It is fairly silly. But if it is anything like Kenneth Branagh‘s Thor, which was knowingly silly, then it the film could be a camp treat.

There is a good pedigree behind the film as well, Joss Whedon is a very trustworthy man. He understands how to deal with fans and respect what they want as well as making a work of searing entertainment.

Look no further than Serenity. The Whedon-helmed follow up  to his cancelled Firefly series basically came from the howls of derision from the devout fans of that show, but that film stands as a terrific thrill ride despite essentially a film born from peer pressure. Whedon knows how to deal with the weight of expectation. So in my mind, he is the perfect man to be in control of The Avengers.

Like The Dark Knight Rises, I can imagine we will see a lot of footage from the set of The Avengers as it continues to shoot in New York, and we will bring you that as we get it.

The Avengers will be released on May 4th 2012.
