The Crown’s Peter Morgan Hopes Emmy Sweep Eases The Pain Of World Cup Defeat

With 13 Emmy nominations in the bag, The Crown creator Peter Morgan has commemorated the show's success, and believes it may take the sting off England's World Cup defeat.

If there was one big winner to emerge from Thursday’s Emmy Awards nominations, it’s Netflix.

The online streaming giant walked away with 112 nominations in total (!), more than any other television network, though it was HBO’s Game of Thrones which earned the most nods for a single series with 22 – including Best Drama, the category it won during 2015 and 2016, but failed to do so in 2017 because it was deemed ineligible.

For Netflix, The Crown scored an impressive 13 nominations, including nods for both Claire Foy and Matt Smith. And series creator Peter Morgan hopes this Emmy sweep can help ease the pain from England’s World Cup defeat at the hands of Croatia. Gareth Southgate’s side enjoyed a pretty incredible run in football’s premier competition, but were ultimately outmatched by their European neighbors, who won last night’s semi-final tie 2-1 after extra time.

We’re beyond thrilled to have been honored with these nominations by the Academy, and especially delighted that Claire, Matt, Vanessa and Matthew have been recognized for their extraordinary performances. We’re all still in mourning after last night’s World Cup defeat, but I know this news will go some way to restoring our spirits.

The Crown Netflix

Circling back to The Crown, though, and it’s only fitting that Netflix and Left Bank Pictures’ period drama is recognized for its achievement now that it’s on the verge of a new era. Claire Foy certainly believes so, too, and paid tribute to her co-stars after being nominated for Lead Actress in a Drama.

Via Deadline:

I am so grateful for and honoured by the Emmys continued support for The Crown. I am so proud to have been part of such an extraordinary cast, crew and production team and I share this nomination with them. I am also thrilled to see my good friends, Matt Smith, Vanessa Kirby and Matthew Goode recognized, and to be nominated alongside such incredible actresses is a true honour. Thank you Emmys….see you in September.

The Crown is expected back on Netflix for its historic third season sometime next year.
