The third season of Netflix’s acclaimed royal drama The Crown won’t be here anytime soon, but our first look at the revamped show has now been revealed.
The official Twitter account of the series shared the very first promo image from season 3 earlier today, featuring new addition Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II. They captioned the pic with a simple warning to the fans, too, saying: “Patience.” It’s not a terribly revealing shot, but the actress looks perfect for the lead role, though she’ll have some very big shoes to fill following on from Claire Foy’s terrific breakout performance.
As has been the plan all along, The Crown season 3 will recast all the major players of the drama since the narrative’s moving forward to a new decade. As such, Colman replaces Foy, while Tobias Menzies takes over from Matt Smith as Prince Phillip. Furthermore, Helena Bonham Carter plays Princess Margaret in place of Vanessa Kirby and Ben Daniels steps into Matthew Goode’s role as Lord Snowden.
From what we understand, production on season 3 just started this month, which Carter revealed back in June. It’ll also mark the planned halfway point for The Crown, as the renewed cast is expected to last for this season and the next before the series moves on to the Queen’s autumn years, meaning a recast will be necessitated once again. Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos said back in 2016 that the plan was for the show to stretch six decades across six seasons, and we still believe that to be the case.
The Crown season 3 is expected to hit the streaming service at some point in 2019, and once we’ve got an exact date for when it’ll premiere, we’ll be sure to let you know.
