While Deadpool 2 received the approval of media monitoring organization GLAAD for its inclusion of lesbian couple Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Yukio, the pansexuality of Wade Wilson himself has been frequently hinted at but remains largely unexplored in the movies. This could all change, however, with future installments, as Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has expressed interest in developing this side of his character further.
When asked about the possibility at the San Diego Comic-Con, the actor seemed to like the idea, saying:
“I certainly think that this universe needs to represent and reflect the world in very real ways. The great thing about Deadpool is that we’re allowed to do things that other superhero movies don’t necessarily do. It’s something that I’d love to see more of, certainly through Wade, certainly through this universe because it’s something that we’re building out more.”
The Deadpool movies have a history of pushing the envelope when it comes to what a Hollywood superhero film can and can’t do, so if any series seems primed to give us the genre’s first openly LGBTQ lead, this may well be the one, though Kevin Feige has also hinted at this possibility for the MCU.
Reynolds commented further on the Merc with a Mouth’s sexuality at a press conference earlier this year, too, where the star elaborated on the “fluidity” suggested in the character’s often flirtatious exchanges with Colossus.
“I think Deadpool’s sort of somewhat fluid, you know? Deadpool’s a guy that…There’s a lot of room in that. He’s in love with Vanessa. Vanessa’s the love of his life and that’s a key part of our story, and it’s the bedrock of everything that happens to Deadpool. But you see that he sort of exhibits these qualities throughout the course of each film. He’s a guy that’s sort of unpredictable and, like I said, he’s a little bit fluid, I think.”
Time will tell where this unpredictable antihero will take us in future flicks, but you’ll be able to revisit Deadpool 2 on Digital HD from August 7th, and on Blu-ray and DVD from August 21st.
