The folks at Marvel Studios work hard to keep a lid on as many spoilers as possible for the movies, but no matter how hard they try, sometimes their own cast works against them.
Alongside Mark Ruffalo, Tom Holland is the worst at keeping secrets and has accidentally revealed some major plot details when he shouldn’t have. One of his most unfortunate is spoiling Spider-Man’s death in Avengers: Infinity War to a crowd of 300 people who had yet to see the movie.
While speaking on Entertainment Tonight recently, directors Joe and Anthony Russo touched on Holland’s tendency to let things slip. Tackling the subject in a light-hearted way, Joe laughed the actor’s crimes against Marvel away and admitted that Holland is too nice too reprimand for his actions.
“What are you gonna do? He’s the nicest guy in the world, so you can never be punitive toward Tom Holland.”
He then went on to talk about how it was a very deliberate decision to pair Holland with Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch for the Infinity War press tour, as the more experienced British actor could keep Holland in check and be on the ball to prevent him leaking any info he shouldn’t. Not that this arrangement worked every time, though.
“Benedict is a great partner for him on the press tour because Benedict is very good at dancing around spoilers and monitoring Tom Holland.”
Anthony then chipped in by making his respect for Cumberbatch clear for being on Holland-watching duty for the duration of the tour. “That’s hard work,” he joked.
Since Infinity War, Marvel seems to have come up with an ingenious way to work around Holland’s blabbermouth – they’ve decided to weaponize it. Back in June, he appeared to spoil the title of his upcoming sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home. However, Kevin Feige later revealed that this was a planned bit of publicity done to trump an expected leak of the title.
At this rate, we wouldn’t be surprised if Tom Holland gets the job of announcing the real name of Infinity War‘s sequel, next May’s Avengers 4. Then again, even if he’s not officially allowed to reveal it, he’ll probably just leak it out anyways.
