Wonder Woman 1984 is now roughly a month into principal photography, but at this early stage of production, plot details remain sparse. We’ve yet to see Kristen Wiig in her Cheetah costume, Pedro Pascal’s character remains a question mark (though we did get our first look at him the other day), and we still don’t know how, exactly, Chris Pine will return from the dead.
Nonetheless, seeing as Wonder Woman is the only successful release thus far for Worlds of DC, I doubt the unknown will scare off many fans. Not to mention there’s also the good news we’ve received this week telling us that director Patty Jenkins will be shooting “select sequences” of the sequel with IMAX cameras, joining The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice as DC films to have used the technology.
The revelation came from IMAX exec Greg Foster, who said the following during a recent earnings call:
“I’m excited to announce that Wonder Woman 2, which comes out in the second half of 2019, will be shot with IMAX film cameras in select sequences. This Warner Brothers DC production, the sequel of the global juggernaut from 2017, is directed by Patti Jenkins and produced by Chuck Roven and Rebecca Oakley Roven. And we couldn’t be more excited that IMAX has been chosen to be a part of the film’s design.”
Exciting, right? Given how explosive the action was in the first film, we can’t wait to see what Jenkins does with the sequel, and you can bet we’ll be checking it out in IMAX. Although, perhaps we shouldn’t be calling it a sequel, as Gadot has explained that WW84 “isn’t a sequel” and is instead a “a new chapter.” Presumably, the actress simply means that her second DC solo movie will have its own tone and storyline rather than following on directly from the narrative of the first film.
That said, Wonder Woman 1984 will still see the miraculous return of Steve Trevor, who’s somehow now in the 1980s despite seemingly dying at the end of the first film during World War I. We’ll get our answers as to how this is possible when the sequel new chapter releases in theaters on November 1st, 2019.
