As much as I’ve dug Gotham for the past few years, it’s hard not noticing that Bruce Wayne is still at a very young age. And though he’s slowly begun living the vigilante lifestyle, actor David Mazouz doesn’t boast the hulking proportions that normally come to mind when we think of the Caped Crusader.
That said, I can’t help but wonder if some sort of time jump will be utilized in the series finale once we see this version of Bruce take up cape and cowl at long last. Don’t forget, he WILL become Batman upon the conclusion of season 5, but it remains to be seen if Mazouz will get the honor, or if a stuntman of an older age will stand in for him.
Regardless of whatever may happen, the actor had this to say to TV Insider in a recent interview:
“That’s kind of the idea of the show. The Batman universe [is] 80 years old. It’s so rich and there’s so many iconic symbols and iconic characters, obviously, and the point of Gotham is to show how all these things came to be. And throughout the show we’ve been having little teases of these iconic things but now, in Season Five, we really get to show them and show their full force and show show them in their entirety and not have to tease them anymore but actually say the words ‘Batman.'”
Well, if Batman is to be formally introduced, them one would certainly hope that somebody say his name aloud!
If you’ve been following along, then you should remember that Bruce did encounter the silhouette of his future ass-kicking self in a vision of sorts in season 4. It was somewhat different than the “I shall become a bat” which most of are familiar with, sure, but this show has proven time and again to be a reinterpretation of the mythos. And in that dream-like sequence, the Dark Knight of tomorrow had a deeper voice, so we can’t rule out either possibility mentioned earlier for the finale.
Gotham returns for its fifth season sometime in early 2019 on Fox.
