Hunter Biden is weighing a potential run for the presidency in 2028, though he remains focused on the current Democratic field. During an appearance on an episode of The Cats Roundtable released Sunday, per The Hill, radio host John Catsimatidis asked if he had any plans to seek the office. Hunter Biden replied, “If I get your endorsement, I may have to.” This follows a previous interaction where he noted that he had not yet made up his mind about a future campaign.
He highlighted that he believes the party has an incredible bench of potential leaders. He specifically mentioned Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker as notable figures. He also offered high praise for California Governor Gavin Newsom, stating, “I love Gavin Newsom, personally.”
Gavin Newsom has certainly been transparent about his own ambitions regarding the White House. He told Robert Costa in October that he would be “lying” if he said he was not considering a bid for the top office following the 2026 midterms. The field of potential contenders includes Senator Jon Ossoff, former Vice President Kamala Harris, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Recent data suggests that some of these candidates are positioned better than others
An August survey conducted by Emerson College and The Hill examined various match-ups between potential Republican and Democratic candidates. The findings showed that Gavin Newsom held small leads over both Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. In contrast, Representative Ocasio-Cortez trailed both of those Republican candidates in the same survey.
Despite the political speculation, Hunter Biden emphasized that his expectations for the next president go beyond party lines. He wants the next leader to commit to a specific set of principles. He said that he wants “the next president to commit to one thing: to commit to adhering to the rule of law. To commit to the idea that we believe in this constitutional republic and the aspirations of normal Americans.”
He added that his primary hope is for the next president to prioritize the safety of the country, noting, “I truly, truly want whoever is our president to succeed. But particularly succeed in keeping this country safe. That’s their primary responsibility.”
Beyond the political landscape, Hunter Biden is prioritizing his own personal journey. He shared that his current focus remains on the 50 million Americans who are still dealing with the struggles of addiction. He has been open about his own history with substance abuse and shared that he recently celebrated seven and a half years of sobriety.
