As Joe Russo tells Wired, Doctor Strange's gloomy prophecy was a way for Avengers: Infinity War to underline Thanos' brute strength.

The Sorcerer Supreme’s prophecy, one which revealed that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have a 1/14,000,605 chance of defeating Thanos, has been discussed ad nauseam.

Whether it’s comparing those odds to the Powerball Jackpot or deliberating the true meaning of Strange’s sacrifice, you don’t have to look too far to find the latest theory concerning Avengers: Infinity War. Who knew one line of dialogue could spawn so much online discussion?

But that’s just it; the Infinity War Blu-ray is living proof that Joe and Anthony Russo – not to mention screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely – were measured in their approach to Marvel’s blockbuster mash-up, meaning every little detail was carefully crafted for maximum impact.

And it seems Doctor Strange’s gloomy prophecy is no different, as Joe Russo told Wired that the whole 14 million-to-one prediction is a way to communicate Thanos’ raw strength in layman’s terms.

Doctor Strange is a prescient character and the fact that he was able to view the events unfolding 14 million times and watching them lose 14 million times is weighing heavy on his heart and doesn’t save him at the end of the movie. So again we wanted to show that no matter what level of power you had Thanos is an unstoppable force and ultimately the victory was going to be his.

It certainly did the trick, as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (and the audience!) slowly come to the realization that, when it comes to Thanos and the Black Order, they’re hopelessly outgunned. Now the onus is on Iron Man and Co. to fulfill Strange’s prophecy during Avengers 4.

In related news, the Avengers: Infinity War director’s commentary yielded news that the Sorcerer Supreme is among the strongest MCU characters, though we imagine he’s merely keeping the throne nice and toasty for Captain Marvel, whose 90s-set solo movie is due to hit theaters in 2019.
