Supergirl Man Of Steel

It Sounds Like WB’s Found A Director For Their Supergirl Movie

I think we were all pretty surprised to learn the other week that Warner Bros. are looking to develop a Supergirl movie, mostly due to the fact that the character also headlines a TV show that's about to begin its fourth season. Then again, if the film and television divisions can lay claim to their own distinct versions of the Flash and Superman, then having two different Kara Zor-Els coexisting shouldn't be an issue, right?

I think we were all pretty surprised to learn the other week that Warner Bros. are looking to develop a Supergirl movie, mostly due to the fact that the character also headlines a TV show that’s about to begin its fourth season. Then again, if the film and television divisions can lay claim to their own distinct versions of the Flash and Superman, then having two different Kara Zor-Els coexisting shouldn’t be an issue, right?

Of course, it’s highly unlikely we’ll be seeing Melissa Benoist pulling double duty by playing the Maiden of Might in the feature film, so WB’s going to need to find another actress to don the red and blue attire. But before we find out who’ll be cast, odds are that a director will first be attached to the picture.

Speaking of which, Geeks Worldwide brings word today that the studio’s settled on someone for the job. It’s not official just yet, and of course, things can always change, but at the moment, Reed Morano’s said to be their top choice, with the female filmmaker having made her mark on the industry thanks to Meadowland, I Think We’re Alone Now and The Handmaid’s Tale. All things considered, she’s a relatively new director, with only a few credits to her name (though she’s acted as cinematographer on a long list of projects), but clearly WB sees something in her.

Though some may argue that hiring a female director is obligatory or forced, it stands to reason that while such a decision wouldn’t make Supergirl any better or worse of a movie, it does add a measure of authenticity to the material. Whereas Patty Jenkins may have been a lifelong fan of Wonder Woman herself, thus assuring her film’s quality, she’s able to examine the icon from a perspective that a man simply can’t.

Similarly, there has to be someone out there who can apply that touch to the Girl of Steel once the time comes. Whether that’s Reed Morano, or another director entirely, remains to be seen, but you can be sure that we’ll let you know as soon as the studio make an official announcement.
