First Clip From The Thing Prequel

It's no surprise that Hollywood is taking a stab at the John Carpenter classic The Thing, but what really pisses me off is how it's clearly stating that it's a prequel, yet the first trailer looks like a complete reenactment of the original film and the title is the exact same as the original film. If you don't have the balls to remake a horror classic than leave it alone. If you want to try and remake it (and probably fail) then be my guest and at least admit that you're remaking it.

It’s no surprise that Hollywood is taking a stab at the John Carpenter classic The Thing, but what really pisses me off is how it’s clearly stating that it’s a prequel, yet the first trailer looks like a complete reenactment of the original film and the title is the exact same as the original film. If you don’t have the balls to remake a horror classic than leave it alone. If you want to try and remake it (and probably fail) then be my guest and at least admit that you’re remaking it.

It looks like no one involved with the production of this film has any idea what they’re doing. The film has been delayed numerous times and at one point it was on the shelf indefinitely, but it looks like Universal Studios sees something in it to warrant an October release. My guess is that they’ve run out of options on what to do with the film and they want to make their money back in some way so why not release it around Halloween time?

MTV has the exclusive first look at The Thing and from the looks of it, they’ve already changed something that worked fine in the classic. Instead of the thing getting thawed out of the ice it looks like it’s going to be smashing its way out, with tons of action and mindless gore to probably follow. It’s these subtle changes that kind of bother me.

The Thing is a timeless classic and it doesn’t need any tweaks or adjustments and while I’ve mentioned again that this is indeed a prequel, it still looks like it’s going to end up being a remake with minor changes. Don’t even get me started on the crappy looking CGI.

The Thing looks like it wasn’t good enough to be deemed a remake, but didn’t have its own ideas to be a full-fledged prequel, so it’s going to ride off the name of the original and try and squeeze every dollar from the diehard fans’ pockets.

The Thing stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton and Ulrich Thomsen. It opens wide on October 14th, 2011.
