By all accounts, Star Trek: Discovery got off to a flyer with its debut season, honoring the legacy of past Trek series while still blazing its own path with former Walking Dead star Sonequa Martin-Green front and center as Michael Burnham.
So it’s fair to say that there’s a certain air of expectation lingering over season 2, which is expected to premiere by way of CBS All Access during the early stages of 2019. And it’s about to unleash a curveball:Â Anson Mount’s Captain Christopher Pike, who looks set to shake up Discovery in a “big way.”
That’s according to Sonequa Martin-Green, who offered some insight into Mount’s newcomer and what he’ll bring to the show’s crucial sophomore run while chatting to StarTrek.com (h/t ComicBook.com):
In that big way that a captain affects a ship and a crew. A crew is almost defined by the essence of the captain. We went through the ringer with Lorca, and so there’s a little bit of PTSD there. There’s a little bit of distrust there because of what we’ve gone through and because we had someone who manipulated us and sought to kill us for his own gain. And so, Pike being the deeply rooted good guy he is, he is going to have an effect on us. He’s soothing in that way. He’s comforting in that way. And hopefully you will see us sort of galvanize because of that.
Make no mistake, Pike will be a welcome addition to Star Trek: Discovery, and Martin-Green ensured that sentiment extended to Anson Mount, too, whom she describes as an “amazing actor.”
Oh, I love him. I just think he’s awesome, and he’s such an amazing actor. I feel like we really lose ourselves in the story together, which is amazing. And chemistry is something that… it’s hard to know as an actor when you’re in the middle of it. It’s hard to say, ‘Do we have chemistry?’ I can feel what I feel, but other people are the ones to tell you if there’s chemistry there. And so, we were very delighted to hear that people see chemistry between us, and I think that it’s a great relationship because he’s a great guy and we love having him.
The second season of Star Trek: Discovery is yet to nail down an official premiere window – let alone a specific date – but there have been rumblings that it’ll somehow connect to the Kelvin timeline. Either way, we know next year’s installment is set to bring Spock into the equation, and if that doesn’t pique your curiosity for another round of Discovery, nothing will.
