It seems Matt Reeves has completed his preliminary script for The Batman.
TheWrap reporter and all-around industry scoopster Umberto Gonzalez brings word today that Warner Bros. are now in possession of Reeves’ first draft, indicating that the filmmaker is finally – finally – ready to set the wheels in motion.
Not only that, but apparently the studio loves what he’s turned in, with the plan being to push the project into production by summer 2019. And as we’ve heard many times before, everyone involved is fully committed to “getting this take” on Batman correct.
Here’s Gonzalez’s scoop:
LIL BATMAN UPDATE: The studio loves Matt Reeves’ first draft of his BATMAN script, he is currently doing revisions & the film is being eyed for a hopeful summer 2019 production start. Of note, the current DC regime is committed to getting this take on the Caped Crusader correct!
Of course, there’s no mention here of who’ll actually play Batman in the film. Recent evidence suggests that Ben Affleck will slip into the cape and cowl one final time, though his role may be limited as Matt Reeves searches for his inevitable successor. This would align with previous rumors claiming that the director is hoping to cast a 20s-something Bruce Wayne, one who will presumably become the face of a bona fide DC trilogy in due time.
Then again, with reports pointing to everyone from Jon Hamm to Oscar Isaac possibly becoming the next Dark Knight, it’s too difficult to say right now what’ll happen. If nothing else, though, this latest update from Umberto Gonzalez proves that The Batman is moving along well and with a script now complete, and Warner Bros. digging it, hopefully it’ll be a smooth road to production from here on out.
