Daredevil Season 3 Won’t Have Any Defenders Crossovers

When Daredevil season 3 premieres on Netflix later this month, don't expect there to be any Defenders cameos in the new run of episodes.

Matt Murdock is officially going back to his roots – which is pretty fitting, really, given that Daredevil season 3 has been pitched as a loose adaptation of Frank Miller’s incredible “Born Again” comic.

That means the next installment of the Marvel/Netflix series kicks off soon after The Defenders finished. If you’re in need of a recap, well, let’s just say Charlie Cox’s brooding hero survived only by the skin of his teeth, leading to a prolonged recovery process under the watchful eye of Sister Maggie (Joanne Whalley).

Such a close brush with death has only galvanized Murdock, but if you’re hoping that some of his fellow teammates might swing by for a cameo, you’re out of luck. Chatting with Screen Rant, showrunner Erik Oleson ruled out the chances of any of the Defenders popping up, telling the outlet the following:

“I wanted it to be standalone, I did not do crossovers this season. I wanted to really get back to these core characters and use the real estate to focus on who they are and really fleshed them out before I introduced external and other elements of the MCU, at least on the Netflix/Marvel side – I really wanted to get back to the core characters and tell a character-driven season.”

That’s certainly unfortunate to hear, even if it is understandable. Still, given that season 2 of The Defenders seems like a pipe-dream at this point, it would’ve been nice to see, say, Danny Rand or even Jessica Jones stop by Daredevil season 3 to cross paths with Matt.

But alas, it’s probably for the best that no such thing will happen. As Oleson says, the new run of Daredevil will be all about getting back to the core characters and fleshing them out. And after the somewhat overstuffed plot of season 2, that can only be a good thing.

All episodes of Marvel and Netflix’s Daredevil will premiere on the streaming site on October 19th.
