The Internet Reacts To Star Trek: Discovery’s Bearded Spock

This past weekend at New York Comic Con, a new trailer for the upcoming second season of Star Trek: Discovery debuted, teasing the intriguing storyline that’ll fuel the sophomore run of the CBS All Access series as well as giving us our first looks at some of the fresh faces joining the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery.

Of course, the biggest talking point coming out of the new preview was Ethan Peck’s version of the one and only Spock. As seen at the end of the trailer, Peck’s Spock is depicted with a healthy beard. Typically, seeing the character with facial hair means we’re dealing with his evil doppelganger from the Mirror Universe, but we’re fairly certain that this one’s the real deal and his unshaven state is just because he’s stranded in space on his quest to track down the mysterious “red angel.”

Where that journey will take him remains unclear, but the internet has certainly had their fair share of opinions on bearded Spock over the past few days, with fans taking to Twitter to react. And below, you’ll find just a small sampling of what folks are saying.

If you remember, the U.S.S. Enterprise’s most famous science officer was first teased during Discovery‘s season 1 finale, when our crew encountered the aforementioned ship for the very first time. But there’s a twist; Spock’s apparently on his own personal journey, as if he’d run into a question he couldn’t answer, as Captain Christopher Pike infers. Details on his arc for the season beyond that haven’t been disclosed just yet, but we do know that we’ll get the chance to explore what made Spock into the person we know him as today.

Speaking about what’s in store, executive producer Alex Kurtzman recently reminded us that the Spock on Discovery is ten years younger than the one who first charmed audiences on The Original Series.

The Spock that we meet is ten years [before Star Trek: The Original Series]. So, he is not formed in the same way that he is formed by the time you get to TOS. What we will learn is a lot of what made him the Spock that he was and what will make him the Spock he is, has to do with his family and his sister.

That’s certainly intriguing to hear, and given that Star Trek: Discovery season 2 appears to be taking the show in a more fan-pleasing direction, we can’t wait to find out what else awaits us when the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery return to CBS All Access in January 2019.
