The Walking Dead season 9 continued tonight with episode 2, titled “The Bridge.” As the name of the installment suggests, the hour was focused on the characters literally and metaphorically trying to build bridges between the different communities. And though Rick Grimes is attempting to set-up a peaceful, united society, not everyone agrees with him – not least Maggie, whose execution of Gregory in episode 1 had repercussions this week.

And tonight isn’t the end of the problems that threaten the communities’ co-existence, either, as things only look to get worse in next Sunday’s episode, “Warning Signs.”  The previously-released synopsis teases that “a mysterious disappearance” will interrupt the continuing work on the bridge as more divisions between the camps occur.

“Rick’s vision for the future is threatened by a mysterious disappearance that divides the work camp where the communities are building a bridge.”

It’s possible this mysterious disappearance will have something to do with the Whisperers, the creepy walker-face wearing cult-like community of survivors who are due to make the jump from the comic book page to the screen this season. They’ve been much hyped, too. TWD producer Greg Nicotero’s promised that Samantha Morton’s Alpha, the leader of the Whisperers, is the greatest villain the show’s ever had. That’s a tall order, Greg, but we’ll take your word on it.

It’s also sad to hear that Rick’s dream of a brighter future is crumbling around him. He inherited the vision from his much-missed son Carl, of course, but on top of that we know that he won’t be around much longer to witness it. Andrew Lincoln’s due to vacate the series by the end of this half of the run and while it hasn’t yet been confirmed that Rick will die, we’d bet good money on it. As such, the least that the rest could do is get along for his last few months.

Be sure to catch The Walking Dead 9×03 “Warning Signs” next Sunday, October 21st on AMC.
