In fact, it’s been said that this latest batch of photos might prove a little too revealing for anyone anxious about spoilers. In these images, Joaquin Phoenix can be seen wearing his full Clown Prince of Crime makeup while sitting in the back of a police car. Judging by the star’s maniacal grin, there’s an excellent chance that this scene is taken from the later stages of the character’s transformation into the classic Batman villain.

While it remains to be seen what precisely Arthur did to land him in the back of that car, it’s pretty clear that this is a protagonist who enjoys making trouble. Previous set pics, for instance, have shown Phoenix causing commotion in the New York subway while seemingly turning a mob against the wealthy Thomas Wayne. What’s more, it’s apparent that Arthur is loving the attention, with one video showing the failed comedian gleefully bowing to his audience.

In the eyes of the Gotham City’s underprivileged citizens, it looks like Arthur will be celebrated as a rebel and a mischief maker, with leaked photos showing admiring crowds holding up signs with politically charged slogans like “Clown4Mayor” and “Kill the Rich.” With that in mind, there’s a good chance that the character’s eventual arrest will only stir the people up further.

We’ll see how the clown earns his reputation when Joker comes out on October 4th, 2019.
