The Terminator Moves Up To Wonder Woman 1984’s Old Release Slot

The fans generally weren’t too happy to hear the news earlier this week that the highly anticipated Wonder Woman 1984 had been delayed a whole seven months from its planned November 1st, 2019, release date, but there’s an upside to this news for anyone keen to see how next year’s The Terminator continues its own decades-spanning saga.

Skydance Media and Paramount Pictures have announced that the sixth entry in the Terminator series will be released two weeks sooner than expected, taking the slot of Patty Jenkins’ DCEU movie. That places the date exactly four years and four months after Terminator Genisys arrived in cinemas and served as yet another underwhelming entry in a series that’s long been struggling to get audiences excited.

If the last few Terminators have left you uninspired though, you might take it as an encouraging sign that James Cameron is back on production duties. But if you’re expecting this to be a nostalgic re-tread of the first two movies, the filmmaker has previously stated his intentions for the property catch up with our changing views of computer technology:

“We’re developing a new Terminator film. And The Terminator films are all about artificial intelligence. But I would say we’re looking at it differently than when I wrote the first story in 1982. That was just your classic ‘technology bad, smart computers bad’ kind of thing. Nowadays though — it’s got to be a much more nuanced perspective. So its ‘Smart computers bad… BUT…’ That’s the new motif.”

Well, the director of the CGI-centric Avatar was hardly going to be a raging technophobe, was he?

Like the latest Halloween, this new Terminator is a soft reboot which reunites the franchise’s most popular pair under a new director – in this case, Deadpool helmsman Tim Miller. While Linda Hamilton is making her long-awaited return as Sarah Connor, Arnold Schwarzenegger is present once more as the T-800, and honesty, it’s pretty hard to say at this point what sort of results this project will yield.

We may just have to find out when The Terminator sequel hits theaters on the newly decided date of November 1st, 2019.
