New Trademarks Hint At Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows

While Star Trek: Discovery isn't stopping anytime soon and the film series remains in a suspended state at the moment, a new report from ComicBook.com indicates that CBS may be preparing for as many as five new Star Trek-related projects. Though the source is only the United States Patent and Trademark Office, here are the listed names that the network recently filed for ownership of in relation to the brand.

While all of these are words and terms which could and sometimes are found in the world of the franchise, only one’s seen any movement on it. As you’ve surely heard by now, a report earlier this week confirmed that Star Trek: Lower Decks was in development and will be headed up by Rick and Morty writer Mike McMahan.

In a statement announcing the news, producer Alex Kurtzman explained why McMahan was chosen for the job, saying:

“Mike won our hearts with his first sentence: ‘I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end,” Kurtzman said. “His cat’s name is Riker. His son’s name is Sagan. The man is committed.”

Though it’ll certainly be interesting to see if the more hardcore Star Trek fans gravitate to Lower Decks, one shouldn’t read too heavily into trademarks as an indicator of news on a project or intellectual property. More often than not, companies file them as a protective measure.

If you’ll recall, in the run-up to Batman: Arkham Knight, Warner Bros. grabbed a number of names, including Arkham Universe, Batman Arkham Legend and even D.C. Arkhamverse. Did we see any of those come to fruition? No, we didn’t. As such, we’ll just have to wait and see if anything comes from any of these newly filed trademarks.

That being said, more Star Trek, if done well, is always a nice counterpoint to the Disneyfied Star Wars, right?
