In the crossover smackdown that is Godzilla vs. Kong, Team Human now has one new member, with Variety reporting that Rebecca Hall has been cast in a lead role for this Adam Wingard-helmed film.
The actress known for Vicky Cristina Barcelona and The Prestige will be joining an already impressive line-up which includes Kyle Chandler (First Man), Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Danai Gurira(Black Panther), Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta), and as of earlier this month, The Nun star Demián Bichir.
For a movie where two giant CGI beasts are supposed to be the center of attention, that’s not a cast to be sniffed at, suggesting that Warner Bros. have every interest in making this the moment that solidifies the young MonsterVerse as its own sustainable cinematic universe. As it stands, this beast-based franchise is still only two films young – those being 2014’s Godzilla and 2017’s Kong: Skull Island – but before this saga gets its own Avengers moment, there’s first the matter of next year’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
For much of the Godzilla vs. Kong cast, this second outing from Hollywood’s current rendition of the big lizard will be their introduction to the series, though they’ll be sharing the spotlight with even more famed creatures, including Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah, as well as the Big G himself.
So, while King of the Monsters may not do much to set up the story of Godzilla vs. Kong, you can bet that the film will still serve as an important stepping stone to the subsequent clash from a marketing perspective. And though early reactions suggest a mixed bag for the Godzilla sequel, the first trailer has done about as good a job as any at getting viewers pumped.
You can expect King of the Monsters to come out on May 31st, 2019, before Godzilla vs. Kong finally hits theaters on May 22nd, 2020.
