Taron Egerton recently got fans worried when he said he wouldn’t appear in the third Kingsman movie, leaving us to fear that his character Eggsy had been written out of the franchise. However, there’s an important distinction to make here: Egerton was referring to the upcoming prequel movie and not Kingsman 3, which will continue Eggsy and Harry’s adventures.
Kingsman creator Mark Millar has helped clarify this for people now by taking to Twitter to explain the difference. As he says, the prequel, previously given the title Kingsman: The Great Game, is about the beginnings of the Kingsman organization a hundred years ago and so obviously, it wouldn’t find a place for Eggsy.
“People seem awfully confused by this. The Kingsman movie Matthew is shooting in the New Year is a prequel set at the beginning of the organisation in 1918 as reported a while back. Kingsman 3 comes later.”
The Great Game will effectively redo the story of the first film, with another middle aged gentleman spy taking a young apprentice under his wing. In this case, Ralph Fiennes is playing the Harry Hart-esque role, while British newcomer Harris Dickinson will play Conrad, a “cocky young son of a British Duke, determined to serve his country, who finds himself thrust into the midst of the world of espionage with some of history’s most dangerous spies and assassins.”
Rachel Weisz is also reportedly circling the project to portray the part of Polly, Conrad’s nanny described as “a ruthless force of nature.” Meanwhile, Brad Pitt could be on villain duty, as historical figure Grigori Rasputin, no less. So, it looks like The Great Game is going to at least loosely base itself on real events.
As Millar promised, Kingsman 3 is set to come after that with a Statesman spinoff likewise in the works. That one will follow Channing Tatum, Halle Berry and Jeff Bridges’ American spy network that was introduced in 2017 sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
We know there’s a lot to digest here, but to put it simply, Taron Egerton will be back as Eggsy in Kingsman 3, which is being made after the actual third Kingsman movie. Is it confusing, yes? But fans can at least rest easy knowing they haven’t seen the last of Egerton in the role.
