We’ve been hearing reports for a while now that filming on Godzilla vs. Kong will be taking place in the coming months, and today, Legendary Entertainment has made it official.

In a recent tweet, the studio behind this aspiring MonsterVerse announced that production on the movie has started, while also teasing the colossal smackdown to come:

“Legends will collide. Production has officially begun on Godzilla vs. Kong. In theaters everywhere Summer 2020.”

Shortly afterwards, an alleged synopsis for the film started making the rounds online that offers few specifics, but does provide some potential insight on the continuing relevance of Monarch in this franchise:

“In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.”

If this description’s legit, then it seems it’ll be more than a few buildings and some unfortunate bystanders that are at risk of annihilation in this clash between beasts.

While there’s still much to be learned about the role of Team Human in the story, there’ve been quite a few announcements lately of new names joining the cast, with the list so far including Kyle Chandler (First Man), Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Danai Gurira (Black Panther), Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta), Demián Bichir (The Nun), and as of a couple of weeks ago, The Prestige star Rebecca Hall.

But before we find out whether any of these people will be cheering for the ape or the lizard, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is set to provide us with our first update on the Big G since 2014’s Godzilla. That film will be hitting theaters on May 31st, 2019, and it has one hell of a trailer to live up to. After that, Godzilla vs. Kong will be providing this franchise with its first real crossover moment when it comes out on May 22nd, 2020.
