Harley Quinn Suicide Squad

Birds Of Prey Star Says It’s A Suicide Squad Spinoff, Sort Of

Despite some pretty nasty reviews, Suicide Squad is one of Warner Bros.' most successful movies in the DCEU, and they're eager to follow up on it. While Suicide Squad 2 and Joker and Harley Quinn don't seem to be going anywhere fast, the studio's at least managed to get Birds of Prey into gear, and it's just entered full production. This shouldn't come as a huge surprise, either, as the film recently announced some major casting coups and promised the introduction of a number of fan favorite characters.

One of them will be Huntress – as played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead – and in a recent interview, she described the project as a spinoff of Suicide Squad, sort of.

“It’s sort of a spinoff of Suicide Squad. It kind of follows Harley Quinn, which is Margot Robbie’s character from those films, and this sort of girl gang that she puts together. I play Huntress, and we’ve got Black Canary, played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Rosie Perez and Ewan McGregor. It’s a really fun, fun cast. We haven’t started shooting yet, but we start shooting in January, and I can’t wait.”

None of this is new to anyone who’s been following the film’s pre-production, of course, but it’s nice to have confirmation that the studio has all their ducks in a row and is ready to commence shooting very soon. Plus, it seems that Warner Bros. are feeling so positive about this that they’re willing to delay an actual Suicide Squad 2. Gavin O’Connor recently left the project as his submitted script was rejected for being too close to their plans for Birds of Prey. In the meantime, James Gunn is working on his own screenplay for Suicide Squad 2 and in all likelihood will direct it as well.

As for Birds of Prey, though, could it be the first genuinely great DCEU team-up movie? Well, the cast is certainly impressive and the buzz is good, so I’ll be keeping a close eye on what gets leaked from the set as we try and work out just what form this all-female superhero caper will take.
