Ewan McGregor’s Black Mask Could Go On To Face Batman In The DCEU

This week brought the awesome news that Ewan McGregor has been cast in Birds of Prey as crime boss Black Mask, the main antagonist of the all-female team-up film. For one, it's great to see McGregor joining the DC universe, but it's also good to finally have Black Mask on the big screen, after a few false starts like David Ayer's Gotham City Sirens.

Roman Sionis is one of the biggest Batman villains yet to feature in the movies, which is somewhat of a double-edged sword. Yes, we’re happy to see him in Birds of Prey, but it would also have been cool to have the super criminal battle the Dark Knight as well. Turns out that it might still happen, though.

The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzales – who first broke the story of McGregor’s casting – revealed that he believes the actor may’ve signed a multi-picture deal with WB, which could mean he’ll appear in a future Batman movie.

“Never say never. Most DC actors have 3 pictures plus cameo clauses written into their contracts so Batman could face off with Black Mask down the line!”

Of course, for that to happen, DC would actually have to do something with the Dark Knight first. With it pretty much a given now that Ben Affleck won’t be back as Bruce Wayne, Matt Reeves has free rein to do whatever he wants with the character in The Batman, which reports say isn’t going to be with us anytime soon. It’s possible he’ll make use of Black Mask, but most signs point to Reeves steering clear of crossing over with any other DC movies.

As The Batman is still very much in the pre-production stages, though, anything could happen and, for all we know, it’s totally possible that Black Mask will return to face off with the Caped Crusader in a few years’ time. Fingers crossed, eh?
