Pixar movies have been known to chew up and spit out many a naïve filmgoer who comes to them expecting little more than a cutesy bit of light entertainment, and that was especially true for the childhood-ending final third of Toy Story 3. Needless to say, the bar has been set high for Toy Story 4, but actor Tim Allen insists that next year’s release will be packing a comparable emotional punch.
When the Buzz Lightyear voice actor appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the star recalled how the movie’s last scene was a struggle to get through.
“[Tom] Hanks said it best, of course he always says stuff best… But the last scene of that movie, I couldn’t even get through it.”
If anything, Hanks went even further in his claims a few weeks ago when he described the film’s finale as “a moment in history.” Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time Allen has teased a devastating conclusion for this upcoming sequel, saying much the same in an interview last month that also saw him liken the story to Avengers: Infinity War. In last night’s talk with Fallon, however, Allen offered a new comparison between the endings of Toy Story 4 and Gone with the Wind.
“It was so emotional,” he explained. “It’s a ‘Scarlet, I don’t give a damn’ moment.”
Of course, Allen didn’t dare divulge what emotional turns this film will be taking, but he did also mention that Keanu Reeves will have a part in the picture, recalling how the John Wick star likened his own character to Buzz.
And speaking of new faces, a couple of teasers from earlier this month introduced us to a few more additions to the old gang, most notably a plastic fork named Forky, played by Tony Hale, who seems frightfully unsure of whether he’s a toy or not. What’s more, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are reuniting as a pair of cuddly carnival prizes who join Woody and his friends on their latest road trip. We’ll find out what heartbreaking developments await all these characters when Toy Story 4 hits theaters on June 21st, 2019,
