Jeffrey Dean Morgan Says He’s Game For A Supernatural Return

If we’ve learned anything from Supernatural, it’s that a character’s death is by no means a guarantee that they’ll never return. Really, Bobby bought it in season 7 and still went on to be a recurring presence. Heck, how many times have Sam and Dean Winchester themselves died? And now that the concept of alternate universes has been wholeheartedly embraced, the possibilities are endless.

So, aside from Chuck/God, who made his long awaited return in season 11, who else would you say fans have been clamoring to see show up at least one more time? The answer is simple: John Winchester, and, more specifically, as played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

As you probably remember, finding Dad after he went missing while hunting was the backbone of season 1. And after he traded his life for Dean’s at the beginning of season 2, Morgan’s iteration of John wasn’t heard from again after his farewell of sorts in “All Hell Breaks Loose.” Sure, Matt Cohen went on to play a younger version in journeys to the past and such, but it just wasn’t quite the same.

In the time since, Morgan has gone on to seriously boost his geek cred by landing career defining roles in Watchmen and The Walking Dead and, more recently, gave the “SPN Family” a glimmer of hope with a Tweet that can be viewed below.

As you can see, his response to a fan makes it clear that his comeback is contingent on the story being right, so maybe it’s time for current showrunners Andrew Dabb and Robert Singer to start cooking something up. You have to admit that with Mary Winchester once again being among the living these days, a reunion with her dead husband would yield some intriguing tales.

Of course, Morgan is highly in demand, so my best guess says he’d be available only for a one or two episode stay. Still, even that would no doubt send the fanbase into a frenzy.

Despite having given Supernatural season 14’s premiere a lukewarm review earlier this fall, I’m more than willing to concede that some real gems have taken form in the weeks since. If the creative team are able to keep it up, then maybe Morgan won’t be very difficult to lure back.
