The Mandalorian Set 5 Years After Return Of The Jedi In The Outer Rim

It’s been a pretty big day for The Mandalorian, with Disney finally releasing a cast list for the first ever live-action Star Wars TV series, confirming and reaffirming previous rumors and reports on the likes of Carl Weathers and Nick Nolte joining the team. And while the announcement didn’t come with any story-related news, THR’s Borys Kit has just offered some intriguing context for the Jon Favreau-penned plot.

The journalist took to Twitter to relay the following intel:

“Sources tell me the story is set about 5 years after the events of Return of the Jedi and is set in the Outer Rim, where people don’t know and don’t care that the Empire has fallen. Gives them latitude in telling certain stories.”

If this is all legit, then we could be looking at a real Wild West environment, as Pedro Pascal’s character navigates a shady and treacherous world populated by mercenaries and Stormtroopers.

What’s more, if one recent rumor is anything to go by, then the Mandalorian’s adventure in the Outer Rim will involve protecting a child that he was sent to kill, with the story said to revolve around the unlikely pair’s relationship. There’s even been some speculation that the child will grow up to be someone important in the Sequel Trilogy, and if the show really is set five years after the events of Return of the Jedi, then from a continuity perspective, the idea seems doable enough.

Granted, it’s still too early to take such theories all that seriously, but if you’re looking for some solid info, StarWars.com has just announced that Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), Omid Abtahi (American Gods), and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man) have all joined the cast. With these additions, The Mandalorian is looking to have a pretty solid line-up, and we’ll get to see how they fare in some remote part of the Star Wars galaxy when the show comes to Disney Plus in late 2019.
