You can go ahead and blame The Conjuring Universe for the lack of Freddy Krueger… sort of.
When asked about the current state of New Line’s long-gestating reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street, writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (Aquaman) told GameSpot that the Conjuring franchise is currently the studio’s main priority, given spinoff films like Annabelle and, to a lesser extent, The Nun have raked in the big bucks across the board.
Be that as it may, a retooled version of Elm Street is still on the cards; it’s just that New Line has doubled down on all things The Conjuring, which has invariably had a knock-on effect on other projects currently waiting in the wings… such as A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Here’s the latest from Johnson-McGoldrick:
It’s still happening. Nothing is percolating just yet. The Conjuring universe is sort of first and foremost on [New Line Cinema’s] horror burner.
Though it may not be considered a top priority for the Powers That Be, fans can at least feel reassured that A Nightmare on Elm Street 2.0 is “still happening,” proving that Freddy Krueger will indeed return in the near-future. When, exactly, we don’t know, but with studios pumping big money into top-tier horror movies (read: It, Halloween), there’s clearly an appetite for carefully crafted genre films with bite – Freddy just needs to wait his turn.
Johnson-McGoldrick continued:
Everybody wants to see Freddy again I think, so I think it’s inevitable at some point.
But what say you? Are you ready and waiting for another trip down Elm Street? Or are you of the belief that Freddy Krueger really ought to stay dead? Leave your thoughts in the usual place.
