Aquaman Passes Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice To Become Biggest DCEU Film

James Wan's Aquaman has now passed Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice to become the biggest DCEU film in terms of worldwide gross.

More good news has arrived for Aquaman today, as Arthur Curry’s solo outing has now edged out Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice to become the highest grossing film in the DCEU.

As it stands, James Wan’s latest effort has pulled in a whopping $887.6 million at the box office, putting the film far ahead of Wonder Woman‘s $821.8 million figure and also in front of the $873.6 million total earned by Zack Snyder’s aforementioned 2016 release. To break down Aquaman’s haul, $649.3 million of it comes from overseas, with the film already standing as the DCEU’s highest-grossing entry outside of North America, and the other $238.3 million has been earned domestically.

That may not seem like a ton of money, and compared to some of its peers it isn’t, but it does place the film above Justice League’s $229 million total on home turf. And considering that that pic had a much larger budget and featured heroes like Batman and Superman, the fact that Aquaman’s now passed it is pretty crazy.

Even outside of the DCEU, Arthur Curry is standing pretty tall. It recently overtook Guardians of the Galaxy‘s $777.3 million haul and has also beaten Thor: Ragnarok ($854 million), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863.8 million) and Spider-Man: Homecoming ($880.2 million). While it’s unlikely to match heavy hitters like Civil War or any of the Avengers movies, these figures are still wildly impressive. Especially for a character who was often the butt of many superhero jokes for years.

All in all, it’s abundantly clear that Aquaman has earned the sequel that the studio so desires, but before we find out what’s next for Arthur Curry, we’ll be able to see if DCEU can follow up on this success when David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! hits theaters on April 5th.
