Rick Grimes Movie Trilogy May Explore The Wider Walking Dead Universe

According to previous comments by Andrew Lincoln, the upcoming Rick Grimes movie trilogy may explore the wider Walking Dead universe.

True to the old saying, just as one door closes for Rick Grimes, another opens. And this time, it’ll mark the beginning of a “bigger story,” according to Andrew Lincoln.

The former Walking Dead actor spoke to Yvette Nicole Brown late last year as part of a Talking Dead special (h/t ComicBook.com), and it was here when Lincoln hinted that AMC’s planned movie trilogy for Rick Grimes may well explore the wider Walking Dead universe, now that Rick has been airlifted away from his old friends and family and thrust into a whole new situation… the details of which are still under lock and key.

In doing so, AMC has teed up a whole new chapter in Rick’s story, and Andrew Lincoln simply can’t wait to sink his teeth in.

And I like the idea that we get to tell a bigger story, maybe with a sort of wider vista. And I’ve always been interested in what’s going on out there, you know, whether or not there is contact with the wider world. I want to know the meta of it all. And I suppose to be able to kind of touch upon that in a contained story for me is a very exciting proposition. [It’s] the start of a bigger story.

Soon after Lincoln left The Walking Dead, the actor was quoted as saying that his departure from the core AMC series was the end of the beginning, rather than the beginning of the end. Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven has also been name-dropped as an inspiration for the Rick Grimes movie trilogy in that Lincoln and Co. want to explore what happens when a renown character – a legend, if you will – is dropped into a radically different situation.

Expect that story to unravel towards the end of 2019, by which point we ought to have more details on AMC’s future plans for one Rick Grimes. The Walking Dead, on the other hand, returns to our screens next month.
