Did Luke Tease The Title Of Star Wars: Episode IX In The Last Jedi?

The subtitle of Star Wars: The Last Jedi was taken from the opening crawl of The Force Awakens, making it only natural that fans would be looking to the 2017 film for clues on what the official title of Star Wars: Episode IX might be. And while we have no strong evidence leaning us towards any single candidate, one user on Reddit still makes an intriguing case for their particular prediction.

Like many a theorist before them, Redditor Wmwortman suggests that a passage of dialogue from The Last Jedi might hint at the title, drawing specifically from the climactic moment where Kylo Ren and Luke Skywalker reunite. When the young Ben Solo tells his uncle that “The Resistance is dead, the war is over, and when I kill you, I will have killed the last Jedi,” Luke offers the following rebuttal:

“Amazing. Every word of what you just said was wrong. The Rebellion is reborn today. The war is just beginning. And I will not be the last Jedi.”

Based on these lines, Wmwortman suggests a subtitle in the vein of “The New Rebellion” or “Rebellion Reborn” for this year’s release, and though the evidence remains very thin for the idea, we’ve certainly heard worse predictions.

For one thing, The Last Jedi places a lot of emotional emphasis in this particular passage of dialogue, which even name-drops the very film it’s in. What’s more, the conclusion to Rian Johnson’s flick made it pretty clear that the rebellion was in serious need of a rebirth, and seeing how J.J. Abrams’ upcoming flick will feature a one-year time jump from the events of The Last Jedi, it’s likely that we’ll be witnessing a heavily reformed version of the Resistance that’s had time to regroup for a fresh assault on the First Order.

In any case, if recent reports are anything to go by, then a title reveal could well be coming this month. But whatever we end up calling it, Star Wars: Episode IX will be viewable in theaters from December 20th, 2019.
