For Westerosi folk, the end is nigh.
Game of Thrones, HBO’s award-winning fantasy epic, is nearing its eighth and final season, and don’t we know all about it. After eight years, 67 episodes and more “what the fuck?!” moments than we care to admit, Thrones is undoubtedly the talk of the town, so the onus is really on showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to deliver on the sky-high expectations.
The jury’s still out on that one, but rest assured, Benioff and Weiss ensured that every cast member gave it their all during the production of Game of Thrones season 8, as Kit Harington (Jon Snow/Aegon Targaryen) tells GQ. As a matter of fact, according to the actor, the final season was “designed to break” the cast – physically, if not mentally.
The last season of Thrones seemed to be designed to break us. Everyone was broken at the end… I don’t know if we were crying because we were sad it was ending or if we were crying because it was so f**king tiring. We were sleep deprived. It was like it was designed to make you think, ‘Right, I’m f**king sick of this,… I remember everyone walking around towards the end going, ‘I’ve had enough now. I love this, it’s been the best thing in my life, I’ll miss it one day — but I’m done.’
Grueling, challenging, torturous – three words Harington would use to describe Game of Thrones‘ swan song, and we’re curious to see how such a challenging shoot has affected individual performances. If anything, there’s a very good chance that Benioff and Weiss were able to extract the very best from Harington and his Westerosi cohorts, which only has us all the more excited for April.
That’s right, Game of Thrones season 8 premieres April 2019 and when it does, every installment will feel like a feature-length movie. There are six to look forward to, so it’s small wonder why Thrones fans are beginning to count down the days…
