Back in the summer, CBS dropped a bombshell on us by announcing that Patrick Stewart was all set to reprise as Jean-Luc Picard for the first time since 2002. But a new era of Star Trek is on the horizon, and the beloved Captain has been thrust into the center of a new story from Alex Kurtzman, who’s seemingly taken on the role of franchise architect – at least, on television.
Not much is known about what he has planned for the next chapter of Picard’s story, but it seems CBS is looking to go all-in on Trek, with the network having recently announced a kid-friendly animated show as well. But they aren’t stopping there, as we’re now learning that they’ve officially given the green light to that rumored Captain Georgiou spinoff.
Yes, “the former ruler of the Terran Empire in the Mirror universe who ended up coming to the prime timeline and joining Section 31,” is next in line to get her own series, which will focus on “a continuation of her adventures in Starfleet’s Section 31 division.”
Of course, Michelle Yeoh will be back to reprise her role and it seems she’s bursting with excitement at the news, saying the following in a recent statement:
“I’m so excited to continue telling these rich ‘Star Trek’ stories. Being a part of this Universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly I believe it will go ‘where no WOMAN has ever gone before!’”
Kurtzman, meanwhile, shared in her enthusiasm, talking about how much he adores Yeoh and how excited he is at the prospect of developing a spinoff for her.
“Michelle has shattered ceilings, broken boundaries, and astonished us with her grace and gravitas for decades. As a human, I adore her. As an actor, I revere her,” he added. “Erika and Boey are remarkable, exciting writers who bring a fresh perspective to the world of Star Trek, and we’re all thrilled to explore the next wild chapter in the life of Captain Philippa Georgiou.”
Clearly, CBS has some very ambitious plans in store for us, with Star Trek: Lower Deck also being announced recently, not to mention talk of a series for Harry Mudd, too. It’s an exciting time to be a Trekkie, then, and as soon as more about the Georgiou show is revealed, we’ll be sure to let you know.
