As a longtime viewer of Supernatural, I can say that the series has done a fine job of wrapping up dangling plot threads in due time. Although, I’m still waiting for updates regarding how “our” Michael has been doing since being locked in “the cage” near the end of season 5, not to mention whatever happened to that Antichrist kid introduced during the same year of programming.
Technically, the absence of John Winchester isn’t quite the same deal, though many viewers have yearned to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan return to the role after being granted a sendoff in season 2’s finale. In fact, now would probably be a good time for a comeback, especially when you consider how Mary has been among the living for the past few years.
That said, our wish was granted last month when Morgan was confirmed to return as part of the series’ 300th episode. And now, we’re learning the details of just how John has come back via what showrunner Andrew Dabb had to say while speaking with Entertainment Weekly:
“Our guys are put in a position where they essentially can have a wish granted. They’re actually expecting something else, but [John’s return] comes from a place of want by Dean. The need for closure is really want brings John back into their lives.”
Based on that, I’m forced to recall Ray choosing the form of the Destructor (the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man) in Ghostbusters. All jests aside, this surreal experience will also bring about the return of Zachariah, so don’t expect for that hour of television to be all fun and games.

“The episode gives Sam a chance to forgive.”
Jensen Ackles, meanwhile, lent some insight into how his character will be affected:
“For Dean, the whole episode is a dream that he doesn’t want to wake up from. But he knows he has to.”
