Ryan Reynolds has become synonymous with Deadpool over the past few years, but before he finally got to don the Merc with a Mouth’s red and black suit, he wore a CGI one for 2011’s Green Lantern. Hopes were high for the Green Lantern Corps’ cinematic debut, but the end result was far from what it could’ve been.
Fast forward to now and the Green Lantern franchise is in limbo, but Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has got a left-field idea about how to save it: Get Reynolds back as Hal Jordan. No, really.
“I swear to you, I would love to see Ryan return as Green Lantern,” the comic book writer Tweeted. “I think it would receive positive reactions. The end credits to Deadpool 2 notwithstanding. Could be massive, just sayin.”
This idea sounds preposterous at first, but if you think about it for a second, Liefeld could actually be onto something here. Sure, Green Lantern is one of the worst superhero movies of the decade, but nowadays, Reynolds is a massive star and fans are desperate to see Hal Jordan and the Corps attempted again on the big screen and served right this time.
After all, Reynolds previously appeared in a failed first attempt to launch DP in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine and then tried again a few years later in 2016’s Deadpool and nailed it that time. So, why couldn’t he do the same thing twice with Green Lantern?
It’d be interesting to see happen, but WB likely aren’t going to consider making a sequel to a critical and commercial bomb any time soon. And Reynolds also doesn’t seem to rate his turn as the Emerald Knight very highly, given that DP 2 post-credits scene. In any case, rumors persist that Tom Cruise could be the DCEU’s Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern Corps movie, which was once pegged for a 2020 release. Though lately, it seems to be one of many DC films stuck in development hell and will likely remain that way for a while longer.
