With 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter finally closing the book on the surprisingly lengthy Paul W. S. Anderson era, the lane is now clear for a new take on the Resident Evil franchise, and as per last night’s announcement, it seems that Constantin Film has a Netflix series in mind for the action-horror property.
Naturally, the internet has its opinions on the news, and while the franchise’s cinematic run apparently wasn’t to everyone’s taste, the general response to this fresh start suggests a mix of cautious optimism and healthy skepticism:
Excited about the Resident Evil series coming to Netflix but don’t you dare speak ill of the Resident Evil movies. Especially not the first one. pic.twitter.com/6EqdcTgXsR

A Resident Evil TV show for Netflix?
After all those live-action movies I can only approach with maximum skepticism, those CG movies are still the shit though and should be watched by all fans.— AlphaOmegaSin (@AlphaOmegaSin) January 25, 2019

You know what? Constantin Films are gonna be behind this, right? Sure, Milla can come, just make sure we get to see what happened right after this scene. Then all will be forgiven. #ResidentEvil #Netflix @ResidentEvil @Netflix pic.twitter.com/2Igkj4QRuF

As it stands, we currently only have the bare details on the planned TV series, with Constantin reportedly still looking for a showrunner. So far, we’ve heard from Deadline that the project will “expand the Resident Evil universe and deepen the existing mythology,” and that the series will explore the inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation and the post-apocalyptic world created by the outbreak of the T-virus. In short, it sounds like what you’d expect from a Resident Evil adaptation.
Incidentally, the Netflix show isn’t the only take on the property that’s in the works at Constantin. Last month, the news broke that 47 Meters Down helmsman Johannes Roberts had been hired to write and direct a reboot of the film series. It was even reported earlier last year that The Conjuring and Aquaman director James Wan was attached to produce the movie, though Wan himself clarified in December that he was no longer involved.
In any case, it sounds like Constantin Film is starting to get a little more ambitious with their take on the Resident Evil property, and we can hopefully expect a few more details on the movie and the show to emerge in the coming months.
