Dark Nights: Metal May Inspire A Future Arrowverse Crossover

By now, you've probably noticed how each successive Arrowverse crossover (arguably) outdoes its predecessor. Really, just when I thought it couldn't get any better than "Crisis on Earth-X," Greg Berlanti and company knocked my socks off with "Elseworlds." Needless to say, there's a very go chance that this fall's "Crisis on Infinite Earths" could raise the bar even higher.

Of course, a prime time adaptation of Marv Wolfman and George Perez’s magnum opus likely won’t be the end of the road for ambitious DC TV mashups, so it’s fair to say that something big will grace our screens in late 2020. In fact, a recent Easter egg dropped by The Flash may have provided our first hint as to what it’ll be.

If you tuned in for “Memorabilia” last week, then you remember the Red Death being name-dropped in the Flash museum of the not too distant future. Those among you who are up to speed on comic books know that fella to be a bizarre Batman-Flash hybrid hailing from the Dark Multiverse, and the current frontrunner when it comes to villains being speculated as season 6’s big bad.

Naturally, we expect for some creative liberties to be taken with the Red Death if he does find his way to The CW because, don’t forget, Batman himself is off limits. That said, it wouldn’t be insane to think, maybe, we’ll instead meet evil doppelgangers of Batwoman and other heroes in order to circumnavigate the red tape. If so, the producers will have to make sure they don’t tread too closely to what’s already been explored in “Crisis on Earth-X.”

Then again, it’s entirely possible for the Red Death to be merely a standalone villain, but I think fans of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Dark Nights: Metal miniseries would love to see it inform something in the live action realm. Whether or not the Arrowverse Powers That Be agree remains to be seen, but they’re eventually going to have to settle on something to serve as the basis for 2020’s crossover. As always, we’ll keep you posted as more develops.
